Listen to Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Norman Louis Knoerlein Sr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, who departed from this world on July 9, 2026, at the age of 85. Born on October 20, 1940, in Maryland, Norman led a rich and fulfilling life, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and community service.

Norman is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Phyllis Knoerlein, and their two cherished sons, Norman Jr. and Chris, along with Chris's wife, Amy. He was the proud grandfather of William Knoerlein. Norman also leaves behind a loving family of siblings, including Bill Knoerlein, Elizabeth Lloyd and her husband William, Robert Knoerlein and his wife Jackie, Susan Lawler and her husband Chris, and Celeste Green, as well as his adopted sister JoAnn Inskeep. He will be deeply missed by a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends, all of whom were touched by his kindness and humor.

A proud graduate of Calvert Hall's class of 1959, Norman often brightened the room during his monthly lunches with Calvert Alumni. He was known for his sharp wit, storytelling skills and jokester personality. He was an exceptional athlete, having earned the title of All-American Soccer goalkeeper at the University of Baltimore. His passion for youth sports continued as he participated as a part-time referee heckler. Among many other passions, Norman was an exceptional Palacsinta chef.

Norman dedicated much of his life to serving his community through his work as a Regional Coordinator for Baltimore County Recreation & Parks. He also taught gym at St. Rita's, where he earned the affectionate nickname "Can Man" for his efforts in collecting cans for building repair fundraising.

Norman's vibrant spirit and compassion have left an indelible mark on all who knew him. His legacy of love and laughter will forever live on in the hearts of his family and friends.

A public viewing is set for Monday, July 13, 2026, from 2:00-4:00 PM and 6:00-8:00 PM at Connelly Funeral Home of Dundalk, 7110 Sollers Point Road. The funeral service will be held the following day, Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at 11:00 AM, also at the funeral home, followed by interment at Sacred Heart of Jesus Cemetery, 7401 German Hill Road, Dundalk, MD 21222.
