On Thursday, February 19, 2026, Theodore (Ted) S. Derka Jr. passed away, leaving behind a lifetime of memories rooted in family, hard work, and the simple joys he loved most.
Ted was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marilyn (Cowger) Derka, and his parents, Theodore S. Derka Sr. and Helen Derka. Their love shaped the man he became - steady, devoted, and proud of his family.
He is survived by his children, Theodore (Ted) Derka and his wife Danette Derka, and Brian Derka Sr. He was a cherished grandfather to Brian Derka Jr., Michael Derka, Alyssa Jackson and her husband Joshua Jackson, and Brieahna Derka. His legacy continues through his great-grandchildren, Jacob Derka, Zion Derka, Drake Jackson, Baileigh Derka, and Ella Jackson.
Ted was also a loving brother to Jeanette Elza.
Family meant everything to Ted. He found his greatest happiness in time spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, always ready with advice, a helping hand, or a story from years gone by.
Outside of family, Ted had a deep love for old cars. Whether he was under the hood, polishing chrome, or reminiscing about the classics of his youth, working on vintage automobiles brought him pride and peace. He appreciated craftsmanship, horsepower, and the nostalgia that came with every rumbling engine. To Ted, old cars weren't just machines - they were memories, history, and a reflection of simpler times.
He will be remembered for his quiet strength, his devotion to those he loved, and the spark in his eyes when talking about his family or a beautifully restored classic car.
Though he will be deeply missed, his memory lives on in the generations he helped shape and in every engine that hums with the kind of character he admired so much.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday March 7, 2026 between 12-4 at Jake's Tavern 1006 Back River Neck Road. Essex, MD 21221.
